Carousel is the musical adaptation of Ferenc Molnár's Liliom. Rodgers and Hammerstein moved the setting from Budapest to New England and added a more optimistic ending to the original story. Molnár, who had previously rejected adaptation requests from Giacomo Puccini and Kurt Weill, advised the American team on the adaptation.
Due to their love for each other, carousel barker Billy and factory worker Julie become unemployed. Since Julie is expecting a child and money is tight, Billy is persuaded to commit a robbery. During his arrest, Billy stabs himself in the heart with a knife. After 15 years, he is allowed to return to Earth for one day from heaven. He gives his daughter Louise a star that will shine a light on the joyless child, leading her to a better future.
Carousel was filmed in 1956 and was named the best musical of the 20th century by Time Magazine in 1999. The song "You'll Never Walk Alone" is a world-renowned football anthem.
