Premiered in London on February 14, 1895, the play is one of Wilde's most successful dramas, in which he cleverly and ironically attacks the Victorian upper class. This absurdly comedic and bitterly scathing reckoning with hypocrisy and superficiality is one of the most frequently performed stage classics. In the fast-paced version by Heinz-Arthur Boltuch, Oscar Wilde's comedy, peppered with wit, becomes a delightful theatrical experience. Oscar Wilde (1854 - 1900) was one of the first dandies, eloquently and flamboyantly dressed, confronting Victorian society with its stuffiness.

Algernon and Jack are two dandies straight out of a picture book. They love pleasure and have invented a double life to reconcile their extravagant passions with their social obligations. Algernon has a sickly friend named Bunbury to escape to the countryside, while Jack has a carefree brother named Ernest, which necessitates his frequent trips to the city. Absurdly, both fall in love with women whose life goal is to marry a man named Ernest. This is convenient, as both Algernon and Jack pretend to be Ernest. From this point on, a wild comedy unfolds around the ambiguity of language, seriousness, truth, and lies. In the end, it turns out that Jack was mistakenly left at Victoria Station as a baby and is actually Algernon's brother. His real name is, in fact, Ernest. A happy ending all around.
