In the turmoil of the civil war, the kitchen maid Grusche finds an abandoned child, takes care of it, nourishes it, flees with it, and risks her engagement to the soldier Simon. A new regime comes to power. Its riders are dispatched to find the child of the deposed governor. Grusche and the boy evade them. After the civil war, the governor's wife claims the child. However, the necessary, Solomon-like decision must be made by the corrupt judge Azdak. For whom will he decide?
The story is a "play within a play," with a frame narrative showing the peasants of two agricultural collectives fighting over a fertile valley after the war. Brecht's parable poses the question: Who owns the land?
Written in exile in the USA, the play premiered in Minnesota in 1948. The Austrian premiere in 1964 at the Vienna Volkstheater was a significant event in theater history, ending the Brecht boycott that had been in place in Austria since the war.
