Massive the ruin of Virneburg looms over the Nitzbach and the village of Virneburg west of Mayen. Despite its dominating location and significance, it is one of the lesser-known dynastic castles in the Eifel region. After all, the noble family of Virneburg produced one archbishop and electors of Cologne and Mainz in the 14th century. The powerful shield wall, a shell tower, and the outer side of the palas, the residential and hall building, currently shape the image of the castle. Many other, rather hidden components suggest the size and significance of the castle, which has belonged to the Rhineland Association for Monument Preservation and Landscape Protection since 1910. On the Day of Open Monuments, Sunday, September 13, the association invites you to discover the castle and its history. Rudolf Conrads from the board of the Rhineland Association for Monument Preservation and Landscape Protection e.V. and the Virneburg local chronicler Günter Pung will present the Virneburg Castle. The presentation includes the history of the castle, a tour of the castle with explanations of the ruin, a visit to the church, as well as a presentation of ongoing and planned restoration works. Meeting point is on the newly designed observation platform of the keep directly at the castle. The tour of the castle is not barrier-free; sturdy footwear is recommended. The **participation is free**, and no registration is required. The approximately one-hour guided tours of the castle take place at 10.00 a.m., 11.00 a.m., 1.00 p.m., 2.00 p.m., and 3.00 p.m. .
