Duration: 2.5 hours
In October 1529, Martin Luther and Huldrych Zwingli met in Marburg to debate theological questions that stood in the way of a union of the Protestant Alliance. At the invitation of the Landgrave Philip of Hesse, they and most of the significant reformers of Germany were guests at Marburg Castle for almost a week.
Starting from the Old University, the nucleus of the oldest Protestant university founded in 1527, the “Luther Tour” leads over the marketplace to the Lutheran Parish Church of St. Mary, the original church of Hessian Protestantism and the site of the “Second Reformation.” Passing many stone testimonies of
the history of the Reformation, we finally reach the castle, the historically significant site of the Marburg Colloquy.
The course and outcome of this unique encounter between Luther and Zwingli, as well as the global political consequences arising from their differing views on the Eucharist, will be discussed at the original locations.
