Experience a piece of history up close: tour of a bunker from the 1960s
Dive into the world of the Cold War and discover a unique bunker that was designed in the 1960s as the control center for disaster relief in North Rhine-Westphalia. Here, in the event of a hot conflict, the evacuation of the population was to be organized and refugee flows managed. After its decommissioning in the 1990s, the bunker has preserved its original furnishings almost entirely to this day – including the technical equipment that makes it an impressive witness to its time.
Experience original technology from the 1960s: teletypes and telephones, emergency power generators, water supply, air conditioning, and heating – all functional and unchanged. Particularly fascinating: a fully equipped broadcasting studio from the 1960s, which is still operational and offers you a unique insight into the communication possibilities of that time.
During the tour, you will step into the role of officials of the North Rhine-Westphalia state government. At various locations, you will have the opportunity to operate the historical devices yourself and get a feel for the challenges and issues that those responsible prepared for in case of an emergency.
This unique journey through time not only provides exciting insights into the technology and structure of a bunker, but also into the societal fears and political realities of the 1960s. Let us transport you to an era when the Cold War held the world in suspense – and discover how North Rhine-Westphalia prepared for emergencies.
