A hidden gem in the medieval town of Oberwesel is the former Minorite monastery. The ruins of the monastery church are the oldest sacred building in the city. Located somewhat concealed in the area of Oberstraße, this site has developed into an architecturally remarkable place over the centuries. In 1836, the monastery was destroyed by a fire. Subsequently, citizens built small houses and workshops within the remaining walls.
Discover the tumultuous history of the Minorite monastery. As the start of the tour, there is a unique multimedia room presentation in the former refectory that provides insights into the almost 800-year history of the monastery. The cloister, church, and sacristy are further stops on this entertaining tour. To conclude, the church ruins in the monastery garden shine in a fascinating play of light and colors. Accompanied by fitting music, a mystical scene unfolds – pure romanticism on the Rhine! The walk combines history and anecdotes, centuries-old ruins, and cutting-edge technology into an exciting experience. A glass of wine should not be missed.
It is important to wear sturdy footwear and weatherproof clothing.
The monastery grounds are not barrier-free!
The meeting point is at the monastery entrance in front of the large info sign (access through Oberstraße and the street "Im Kloster").
