A new costume tour takes you on an unusual and entertaining journey back in time to the year 1552 and the Franciscan monastery in Oberwesel. Meet two truly remarkable characters: Brother Heribert, who is the last priest to guard the monastery after the death of the guardian, and Sister Nixnuzia, an energetic Cistercian nun whose path led her from Hunsrück to Oberwesel.
How can a single monk manage work, prayer, nursing the sick, and running the monastery? It would be an impossible task – were it not for the resourceful Sister Nixnuzia, who quickly gets to work and, together with Brother Heribert, keeps spiritual life on the Rhine going.
On their tour of the monastery grounds, the two recount with wit, heart, and historical depth the challenges of the Reformation, everyday life in the monastery between duty and piety, and the little ins and outs of their unusual working community.
The tour concludes in the present day: in the refectory, guests can enjoy an elaborately produced 3D film (approx. 18 minutes), which was created as part of a LEADER funding project. It offers fascinating insights into the former life of the Oberwesel monks – within the monastery walls and in their interactions with the town's citizens.
Visitors can now virtually enter areas that no longer exist: they can discover the furnishings of former buildings and experience the monastery church “Heilig Kreuz” (Holy Cross) before the fire in 1836 with its baroque interior in impressive detail.
A monastery schnapps sets the right mood and rounds off the approximately 1.5-hour journey of discovery, which combines history, storytelling, and a multimedia vision to create an extraordinary experience.
Duration approx. 90 minutes;
Sturdy shoes and weatherproof clothing are important.
The monastery grounds are not barrier-free!
The meeting point is at the monastery entrance in front of the large information sign (access via Oberstraße and Straße “Im Kloster”).
