"Chanson is world theater in three minutes," Tucholsky (reportedly) said - and he was right in the midst of the heyday of German chanson between 1918 and 1933. We hear about intimate things, mundane everyday life, criminal careers, exoticism, and of course love, whether it is heavenly or completely messed up.
