With Metropolis, director Fritz Lang created one of the most significant works in film history in 1927. The new restored version "2710" brings the visionary silent film back to the big screen in impressive image quality. The monumentally staged fairy tale tells of a futuristic city where workers keep the gigantic machines running deep underground, while the wealthy live a life of luxury and glamour above them – until the fragile order threatens to break apart in a catastrophe. As the first and so far only film in the world, Metropolis has been inscribed in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register and is still considered a milestone between pop culture and avant-garde.
A special experience will be the performance accompanied by the sensational live music of Stephan Graf von Bothmer. The renowned pianist and composer has been thrilling audiences on five continents with his spectacular silent film concerts for years. Whether at large festivals like the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival or at the Berlinfestival at Tempelhof Airport alongside artists like Björk, Blur, and the Pet Shop Boys – his concerts go far beyond a classic film screening. For each film, Stephan Graf von Bothmer composes a captivating film score that makes the emotional impact, the tension, and the visual language of the film intensely palpable and draws the audience directly into the world of Metropolis.
