According to old traditions, the residents of Altdorf open their wine festival. Strong men raise the festival tree, the local women distribute hearty lard bread, and the mayor serves 100 free glasses of wine from a wooden cask. Only the wine princess doesn’t arrive by carriage but in a convertible. All of this happens on Friday evening. Music plays for the free wine tasting. Occasionally, a cultural event, such as Palatine cabaret, takes place in the Gäuhalle. Meanwhile, the wine festival unfolds as usual at ten serving stations. For five days, the 800 residents of Altdorf celebrate their wine festival in the wineries, restaurants, and the community courtyard of the clubs at Eichplatz. The musicians move from courtyard to courtyard. Particularly enjoyable is the ambiance at the wine and sparkling wine estate Spelzenhof. Here, you can enjoy the wine in stem glasses and also expect good cuisine. Altdorf has a vineyard area of 120 hectares, with eight wineries in the area and other grape producers. The Palatine white wine classics Riesling, Silvaner, and Müller-Thurgau are cultivated and served at the wine festival, along with Burgunders and other red wines.
Palatine Festivals for Everyone
Since 2017, there is the “Palatine Festivals for Everyone”, a unique initiative in Germany. The aim of the initiative is to designate wine festivals for all. A specially established commission is gradually reviewing the accessibility of the festivals in terms of quality, ambiance, and barrier-free access.
