A significant monument of technological history and Moselle shipping in Trier
Trier is very rich in impressive monuments from all eras since Roman times. One building that is rather rarely noticed is the so-called Old Crane from 1413, the first documented land-built harbor crane in Trier.
It once gave its name to an entire district and was the focal point of bustling activity along the Moselle river, where ships docked and set sail, goods were loaded, and shipbuilders always had something to do. Nothing of all that can be seen today, but the crane still stands in its old place. As a highlight of the tour, there will be a rare opportunity to view the crane house from the inside and to familiarize oneself with the medieval technology that still exists today.
