In the middle of the Hillesheim limestone basin lies a range of hills known as the Hönselberg. Geologically, the limestone here was formed 390 million years ago, during the Middle Devonian period. Half of the nature reserve is covered with beech forest, while the other half consists of sparse pine forest with shrubs and limestone grassland with juniper. The open limestone grasslands in particular provide an important habitat for a variety of rare plant species, such as cat's paw, pasque flower and over 10 species of orchid. If you would like to discover some of these botanical beauties, I will guide you to these locations on my approximately 4 km long hike. Be sure to bring a camera in your rucksack. Sturdy shoes and rain gear are recommended, and please bring your own food.
