Schumann's "Colorful Leaves" is a varied collection of 14 lyrical, poetic, and lively character pieces that depict Schumann's imaginative expressiveness. Prokofiev's "Four Pieces for Piano" is also a collection of four contrasting character pieces that combine lyricism, melancholy, impulsive rhythms, and wild motoric. Medtner's "Forgotten Melodies" offers a mix of late romanticism and Russian folklore. The Meditazione unfolds wandering piano sounds that explore color and harmony. The Romance picks up a motif from the Meditazione before Primavera evokes spring and reminds one of Schumann in his cheerful mood. The Canzona matinata depicts gentle, singable melodic lines and leads directly to the Sonata Tragica, a work of pure passion and dramatic contrasts.
