Just as Italy has its Naples, the French have their Revolution, the English their shipping, etc., so the Germans have their Beethovenschen symphonies…” - thus Schumann. Although the two titans never met in person, they were kindred spirits. Both were early music enthusiasts and took an active interest in the events of their time. Two of the most significant composers were musical boundary crossers, always in search of the new. Peter Tchaikovsky wrote in 1871: “Schumann’s music, which organically connects to Beethoven’s work while decisively breaking away from it, opens up a whole world of new musical forms to us.”
Beethoven’s “Appassionata” and “Tempest Sonata” are among the most famous, painful, and emotionally intense piano sonatas.
