The goat buck tradition with the Historical Goat Buck Auction is based on medieval grazing rights between the towns of Lambrecht and Deidesheim. For centuries, this unique custom has been celebrated on Whit Tuesday. Today, it has become a festival around Pentecost, celebrated with a lot of passion, humor, and a good dose of local pride.
During a approximately 1.5-hour tour through Deidesheim, you will learn about the background of this extraordinary tradition. The grazing rights were first documented in 1404, and in 1534, the goat buck was specifically recorded as a natural lease.
What is the story behind the "well-heard, well-beaten" goat buck? What role did Napoleon Bonaparte play? Why have there been heated disputes and even court cases between Lambrecht and Deidesheim over the centuries? And how did it happen that the goat buck was even kidnapped?
Look forward to exciting anecdotes, entertaining stories, and a little surprise at the end of the tour!
