The Bremen Town Musicians: An animal-filled journey full of wit and heart. A family play by Philipp Löhle, based on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale Music by Florian Schmidt-Gahlen Who doesn’t know the Grimm fairy tale about the four animals who outwit the robbers? A lame donkey, a tired dog, a toothless cat, and an old rooster decide to stick together and become town musicians in Bremen. They are certain: “We’ll always find something better than death.” For death looms because their owners have driven them away. On their way to Bremen, the “retirees” experience all sorts of adventures and, in search of a place to spend the night, end up in an old forest hut. But it’s already occupied—by robbers, who, however, hadn’t counted on the animals either. The play “for talking animals and grumbling humans” empathetically advocates for more human connection in our highly performance-oriented world through situational comedy and wordplay. And it shows that community and hope arise where like-minded people come together. Everyone has a different skill; everyone is useful. The animals also stand for social justice and the courage to stand up together against oppression.
