“I am studying zoology again,”
Johann Peter Hebel wrote to his friend Carl Christian Gmelin in 1796.
While Gmelin was away due to the war, Hebel oversaw
collections and teaching—and develops a “plan” all his own,
an unusual approach to zoology.
The lecture explores this plan and situates it within the period of upheaval of the
late 18th century, when the Bible, nature observation, collecting, and
systematization converged in new ways and the modern
natural sciences emerged.
