"Fairy-tale fable and bitter malice: both are familiar to Klaus Busch," wrote the Münchener Merkur about the artist Klaus Busch, who grew up in Wetzlar and now lives in Deggendorf, Lower Bavaria. With his detailed image language that often walks the line between "serious" art, satire, and caricature, he is known to a wide audience in Germany and Austria. In the Wetzlar City Gallery, he presented the 40-part "Narrenspiegel" cycle in 2021 as the kickoff to an exhibition tour with nine stops in Germany and Austria, which was visited by more than 10,000 art enthusiasts. At the center of Klaus Busch's artistic work is the pastel chalk technique using quite sharp chalk. His rather unusual approach to this technique has led to his participation in over 30 national and international selection exhibitions and earned him a few art awards over the past years.
In early 2024, Klaus Busch began a cycle of (almost) black-and-white portraits of rock musicians who accompanied him throughout his life. Not the young glamorous musicians, but the aged ones, showing the traces of what is hopefully a wild life. He has made it a prerequisite that he has seen the portrayed subjects live in real life. All 36 works of the cycle, each featuring a splash of color in the otherwise black-and-white drawing and framed with the corresponding concert tickets, will be presented in full for the first time at the City Gallery. During the Night of Galleries and Museums in May 2025, the Wetzlar audience had already gotten a glimpse of a few selected works from the cycle. The exhibition will be complemented by an extensive "encore" of selected pastel chalk works from the last 20 years.
