Musikzimmerkonzert: Malakoff Kowalski & Johanna Summer

Experience great musicians up close in an intimate atmosphere, engage in conversation over good food and drinks, and spend an unforgettable evening together with the new series of music room concerts!

Every year, we would like to invite a special artist and offer our guests a unique experience in the original rooms of Max Slevogt.

This year, the series kicks off with a very special duo: Johanna Summer (piano) and Malakoff Kowalski (vocals).

“Songs with Words” as a contrapuntal allusion to Mendelssohn Bartholdy's “Songs without Words”: This is the title of the new album by the German-American-Persian musician and composer Malakoff Kowalski, recorded with Igor Levit, Johanna Summer, and Chilly Gonzales on piano.

The repertoire consists of classical miniatures, including works by Schumann, Chopin, Debussy, Grieg, and Ravel, paired with sung texts by Beat poet Allen Ginsberg. The extraordinary quartet achieves a novel music here, possibly an entirely new genre that is vaguely situated between classical, jazz, and pop.

What can be heard is a singer-songwriter cycle that faintly recalls Tom Waits and Jim Morrison, intertwined with Bill Evans, Kurt Weill, or Michel Legrand. In the intimate atmosphere of Max Slevogt's music room, Kowalski, together with Johanna Summer, presents this total work of art: European piano tradition woven together with American poetry. Additionally, excerpts from Summer's piano albums “Schumann Kaleidoscope” and “Resonances” as well as from Kowalski's albums “My First Piano,” “Onomatopoetika,” and “Piano Aphorisms” will be played.

We welcome our guests before the concert with a champagne reception.

During the subsequent joint dinner (3-course menu), there will be plenty of opportunity for conversation and exchange.
