Die Dreigroschenoper - EXTRA auf dem Slevogthof

A piece by Bertolt Brecht based on John Gay's "The Beggar's Opera", in collaboration with Elisabeth Hauptmann, music by Kurt Weill

“First comes the feed, then comes the morals.” A quote that has stood the test of time: Whether it’s the exaggeration of a society where the law of the strongest prevails, or the widening gap between the rich and the poor. This play continually opens the audience's eyes and confirms the observations from yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

In 1928, Bertolt Brecht and Elisabeth Hauptmann created the Threepenny Opera, a work that remains timeless to this day. The struggle for existence between the London beggar mafia Peachum and the criminal Macheath unfolds a story of fears, love, and hopelessness. Despite the harsh themes, a healthy portion of humor, spiced with the music of Kurt Weill, is the recipe for a moving and thought-provoking theater evening.

The theater makers approach the piece by creating a specially written prologue. The audience is guided through various stations, featuring social studies from today's twenties and newly composed music, to the actual venue of the Threepenny Opera. This production at the Southern Wine Route emphasizes the unbroken relevance of the material. The principle of station theater, which has always been a hallmark in the productions of the theater creators as part of the culture summer, thus remains an existential component of this year's project.

To involve the entire region, additional events 'Threepenny Opera - EXTRA' will take place at architectural gems around the Verbandsgemeinde Bad Bergzabern and the city of Landau in the Palatinate. These will primarily focus on the musical aspect of the Threepenny Opera. The evergreens of Kurt Weill will be contrasted with modern jazz adaptations to shed light on the acoustic worlds in the change of time.
