Relief or letterpress is the oldest known printing technique. Early printing rollers and stamps made of wood, clay, or stone were used to create patterns, mark items, and disseminate information. With the invention of linoleum at the end of the 18th century, an affordable and easy-to-work-with material became available that had no tradition or historical background. The idea of printmaking as an accessible art form for everyone continued to grow. In this spirit, we want to playfully approach the technique of linocut:
Inspired by the colors and shapes of the Slevogthof and its magnificent view, we will select a motif that can be implemented as a two-color linocut. Whether a simple pattern of chestnut leaves or an impression of the gentle hills of the Southern Palatinate landscape is up to each individual to decide. No drawing skills are necessary, but of course, they are an advantage. Together we will consider how best to implement the motif with two printing plates, one for each color. Along the way, we will learn about the various materials, tools, and techniques. Printing will then be done with the lever press or by hand with the bar. We will play with colors, layers, compositions..
All necessary materials and tools will be provided, and you are welcome to bring your own papers and similar items to print on. Own ideas and concepts are of course also welcome.
