What do primeval cattle (aurochs) do in the Palatinate Forest?
Discover the fascinating connection between nature and wildlife on a guided tour through the aurochs area in the St. Martin Valley. Learn exciting facts about the flora and fauna shaped by the aurochs.
On the initiative of Peter Hiery, a 44-hectare grazing area was created in 2011, providing a home for a herd of Heck cattle. These wild cattle actively shape the landscape: The over 100-year-old pine forest is gradually to be transformed into a light-flooded, semi-open mosaic landscape.
A 4.6 km long aurochs path has been established around the area, inviting walking and nature experiences. During the guided tour, you will cover a distance of about 1 km along unpaved paths.
Note: Please wear sturdy footwear. Dogs are not allowed in the enclosure.
