“Silent Friend,” the award-winning film largely shot in the Old Botanical Garden of Marburg, explores the relationship between plants and humans. In the workshop “Resonances of Leaves,” we have the opportunity to creatively connect nature, technology, and art. Some insights into the history, cultural and technological prerequisites, and the environment of some protagonists will be illuminated in an introductory lecture, along with practical sound possibilities explained. We will explore how plants produce vibrations and how we can translate these into sounds and music. Using special interfaces, a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW), and virtual synthesizers, plants will be transformed into small soundscapes. In collaboration with Düsseldorf composer Christian Banasik, the various facets of these areas and phenomena will also be experimented with interactively.
Feel free to bring (small) potted plants.

This event is part of the Schlossbegegnungen series with the monthly theme "Resonances".
June 2026: Resonances
Where something starts to move, other things can resonate: intensifying, deepening, transforming. In physics, a system responds particularly strongly to the appropriate frequency – bridges that sway, glass that shatters, or atoms in quantum physics that only "respond" at certain energy levels. Resonance shows: Nothing exists in isolation; everything is receptive to impulses.
In music, resonance becomes audible: In string instruments like the violin or lute, a vibrating string brings the resonating body to sound, overtones and room acoustics make the tone lively. Resonance is relationship – between material, space, ear, and emotion.
Resonance also occurs between people. Words, glances, ideas can create echo, establish community, or fade away. Social resonances shape debates, movements, and politics: Topics gain strength when they resonate in many biographies.
Our events explore resonances from physical vibrations to musical sound spaces to social and political echo effects. They invite you to listen: Where do we start to resonate? What do we amplify – and what do we bring to sound ourselves?
