July 2026: Rösselsprung
Chess connects people worldwide – regardless of language, origin, or physical limitations. It arrived in Europe from India, Persia, the Arab world, and China, and continues to fascinate players of all generations to this day. In the Middle Ages, the pieces reflected societal structures. The queen was originally weak, but in the 15th century she gained her current strength – a reflection of societal changes. At courts and in monasteries, strategic thinking, planning, and cleverness were trained.
Chess also had political significance: In the Soviet Union, world championship titles were promoted as a sign of intellectual strength, the board served as a stage for ideological confrontation and as a symbol of national superiority.
Our events invite you to discover chess and puzzles in all these facets: Cultural history, strategies, and surprising connections come to life as visitors explore tactics, patterns, and moves themselves.
