To kick off the new season, the village museum of Oberrosphe offers a fascinating insight into the world of toys from 100 years ago. Renate Lang has lovingly arranged the treasures of the museum in individual scenes.
About 100 years ago – in the 1920s – children's toys were much simpler, mostly mechanical or completely without technology, heavily influenced by everyday life and role models, and often handmade within families. Thus, one can find both handmade dolls for the girls and wooden trucks for the boys.
The extensive collection, which has now been presented for the first time in an organized manner in a new room, ranges from homemade toys to dollhouses, grocery stores, and doll dishware, as well as children's furniture, doll strollers, and teddy bears.
On average, children had significantly less personal toys than today, especially in poorer families. Everyday objects were naturally repurposed: tires from barrels or rims as play wheels, stones, sticks, and cloths as "materials." Playing outside was normal: circle and movement games, jumping games, simple betting and skill games. Much was born from imagination: a few building blocks, figures, and a wooden horse were enough to create whole worlds.
Dive into the fascinating toy world from 100 years ago, explore your own memories, and let images from your own playtime reappear.
The exhibition at the village museum of Oberrosphe is open from Easter Saturday, April 4th, every Saturday and Sunday from 2:00 PM to 5:30 PM. Afterwards, you can enjoy coffee and homemade cake in a genuine, old grocery store.
