Now dear citizens, today you will accompany the night watchman on his journey through the city. The day is coming to an end, and the common citizen goes home after a day’s work. In ancient times, it was also the duty of the night watchman in Landau to protect the city from harm.
The duty of the night watchman was to keep an eye out for ne'er-do-wells, to protect the city from fire, and to safeguard the citizens.
He also had to take into custody suspicious and disreputable people, night owls, brawlers, citizens with glowing tobacco pipes, and citizens with burning fuses.
While the good citizens sleep, the night watchman roams the city. Hourly, a signal was blown and the hour proclaimed. This way, the good citizen could hear that the night watchman was faithfully doing his job.
