In three works of this matinee, it becomes audible how differently composers react to current events. Hanns Eisler strikes a socially critical, at times cynical tone in his "Newspaper Clippings" ("Marriage Announcement of a Landowner"); Paul Hindemith, shaken by the experience of World War I, flings open the door to modernity in his viola sonata composed in 1919; and Alfredo Casella seeks to connect with the 18th century by reverting to the joyful playfulness of serenades. The "Kegelstatt" Trio, which is to be heard at the beginning, is said to have been composed by Mozart incidentally during a bowling evening: A masterpiece has certainly emerged...
