The 80th special exhibition at the Museum im Hirsch features lovingly crafted themed worlds—from a medieval knight’s castle to a pirate ship, a construction site, a circus, and a train station—that invite visitors to marvel and explore.
Themed worlds from two collectors range from a medieval knight’s castle to a Western saloon, pirate ships, a construction site with an excavator, a roller, and a construction trailer, several circuses, a farm complete with a barn and many animals, race cars, a police station, a café, and a train station—all populated with matching figures and accessories. There’s even a train that goes round and round.
The history of Playmobil began in the 1970s at the company geobra. Its head of development, Hans Beck, designed small figures measuring about 7.5 cm with large heads, friendly smiles, and no noses, which were unveiled at the Nuremberg Toy Fair in 1974.
Today there are over 20 themed worlds with extensive accessories. The figures have continuously evolved: the first female figure appeared in 1976, 5.5-cm children’s figures in 1981, and there are numerous special editions, such as Schiller, Goethe, Hermann Hesse, and Martin Luther.
Technical innovations expanded the play possibilities. In 1982, for example, rotating hands, improved hairstyles, and more realistic facial expressions were introduced. Playmobil figures can stand and sit. Worldwide, approximately 3.8 billion Playmobil figures populate children’s rooms and are collected. Since 1974, around 4,000 different figure variants have been produced.
