Insights into the History of the University of Trier
Today, there are three institutions of higher education in Trier: the University of Trier (originally founded in 1473, re-established in 1970), the Trier University of Applied Sciences (1971), and the Theological Faculty of Trier (founded in 1950). Some posters and T-shirts also promote the Karl Marx University of Trier. In the past, there have been many proposals suggesting the idea of a patron saint (e.g., Nicholas of Cusa or Theodor Heuss). By the way, from 1761 onwards, “ancient university” was also in use. This was because at that time, the 300th anniversary of its founding was approaching. Undoubtedly, Trier is one of the early university foundations in the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. In 2023, the 550th anniversary was commemorated, recalling the founding in 1473.
It all began in Dietrichstraße. Those who delve into this university history will continuously encounter new discoveries. That is where we head, and it will be shown what belonged to “the many kind gifts” that Trier received with the old university. The associated ups and downs must also be recounted. The academic search for traces of this ancient institution begins at the Simeon Stift. It ends where it came to a long halt in 1798: in Jesuitenstraße.
