“Fossils - An Exciting Journey Through Earth’s History
Fossils are petrified witnesses of long-past life. They are therefore valuable windows into the past, documenting both the physical form and the behavior of prehistoric organisms. Fossils are formed through complex geological processes and are the central element of paleontology for understanding the development of life on Earth.
This development is vividly presented in the new exhibition from May 12 to November 2, 2026 using selected exhibits from around the world from the impressive private collection of Maximilian Wolf from Contwig.
An interesting journey through the world of fossils is showcased, from relics of the first multicellular organisms, which are a proud 550 million years old, to exhibits from the last Ice Age. Besides impressive fossilized remains of fish and insects from the Bavarian Solnhofen, an ichthyosaur skull and ammonites from the Swabian Jura, teeth from the megalodon – the largest shark in Earth’s history – from the USA, and small swimming reptiles from Madagascar, local fossils from the Palatinate are also presented.
The focus of the exhibition is the age of dinosaurs. For example, bones and teeth from 150 million-year-old dinosaurs from Wyoming in the USA are displayed, where Maximilian Wolf has also participated in excavations himself. Accordingly, interesting information about excavation, uncovering, and preparation of the exhibited pieces is also provided.
