Logging in the forest

How does the tree get out of the forest? An important step in forestry is what is known as timber hauling. This involves transporting the felled timber from the forest to a road, from where it can be transported further and sold. There are many different methods for this—from the past to the present: from simple manual transport and horses to modern forestry machines and even helicopters. At several stations, we’d like to introduce the most important methods of timber hauling. We’ll explain the different options available and why different systems are used depending on the terrain, soil, and forest. *In addition to fascinating explanations, there’s plenty to see: Children can watch a horse-drawn hauler at work and observe modern forestry machines from a safe distance.*
