Special guided tour of Heuneburg: The Danube between Hundersingen and Binzwangen – A near-natural river landscape and its ecological development

During this guided tour of Heuneburg, visitors can look down upon the scenic beauty of the Danube Valley. The tour explains how the Danube was restored to a near-natural state between 2009 and 2011.  The section of the Danube below Heuneburg, which had been modified in the 19th century, underwent extensive renaturation between 2009 and 2011. The goal of this project was to give the river more space again and allow natural processes to take place. This created a shallow, meandering riverbed that connects to the existing course via a ramp. This allows the Danube to develop dynamically once again, redistribute gravel, and form new habitats. The excursion vividly illustrates the ecological developments that are possible when aquatic landscapes are largely left to their own devices. Helmut Emrich expertly guides interested participants through this area and provides fascinating insights into the interrelationships between aquatic ecology, land use, and development. The Baden-Württemberg Water Guides were trained by the WBW Fortbildungsgesellschaft on behalf of the Ministry of the Environment and possess a broad range of knowledge regarding flowing waters and their significance for nature and people.
