Even the freedom of a vagabond life has its limits.
And so the aged and ailing Knulp is glad that he can rest for a few days with two schoolmates—one a pastor in Stammheim and the other a doctor in Bulach—before he wanders on to Gerbersau and bids farewell to his hometown. In conversations with the pastor, the doctor, and finally the Lord, he looks back on his eventful life and asks himself self-critically whether it has been a good one.
