On the Schießberg, where the Hesse Gymnasium stands today, the Calw Poorhouse was located in the 19th century. In his 1904 short story, which became a popular success, Hermann Hesse humorously imagines the opening of this asylum with the arrival of two men who have failed in life in different ways and now attempt to salvage the last remnants of their dignity in a duel.
