Oil paintings that straddle the line between figuration, abstraction, and inner imagery Under the title “Kopfkino,” the Kulturhaus Schwanen is presenting an exhibition by Stuttgart-based artist Pirmin Lang. On the first floor of the building, he presents his multi-layered oil paintings, which oscillate between figuration and abstraction and explore questions regarding the conditions and processes involved in the creation of images in the broader sense. How is it that human perception not only creates images of the world, but also of the world itself? No reproduction or memory exists without variations and echoes of alternatives. Something else is always revealed. Sometimes it is merely a whisper that plays around things like light; at other times, the realm of images behind the eyes gains more space to intervene and unfold, and sensuality condenses as in a face. Both are found in Pirmin Lang’s images. Cues from the familiar intertwine with moments of strangeness. Thus they stand there, as if they were being seen for the first time. Here, unsettling colors give the familiar a new form; there, unknown things take on familiar colors. Together they form a structure, a visual concept, a question posed: Who sees when I become someone else through seeing?
