The old miners' lamps are displayed right at the entrance to the barrier-free historic tunnel. There, you will learn more about the diversity of miners' lamps over the centuries in a brief introduction – from the so-called “Unschlittfrosch” to the “Freiberger Blende” and the lens lamp – and discover how the miners positioned their lamps to achieve the best possible light output in the darkness of the tunnels. Then your descent into the dark historic tunnel begins. Our oil lamps are the only source of light. As you slowly move along and orient yourself with the handrails, your eyes will adjust to the darkness in which the miners once worked. In contrast to the hard labor of those days, we can enjoy the calm and mysterious atmosphere, hear the echo of water droplets resonating in the darkness of the long tunnel, and feel the tension between stillness and history. After the experience in the darkness, there will be a short break to warm up, refresh, and readjust to daylight.
In the second part, you explore the main mine with its massive, man-made caverns. Enjoy the sight of malachite and azurite shimmering splendidly in green and blue tones under full lighting, but also remember that the miners of the Middle Ages could never truly see this magnificent work with their oil lamps. Your Sunday experience, rich in vibrant history, will finally be rounded off with a demonstration at the Fischbach copper mill. Here you will witness how, as in the Middle Ages, copper ore was crushed using sophisticated technology in a water-powered stamping mill and finally smelted into the coveted "Red Gold."
Included: approximately 40-minute guided tour with historical oil lamps in the barrier-free heritage tunnel for adults, followed by a combined tour through the main mine and the copper mill.
German-speaking tour: texts in various languages are available upon request for the main mine and the copper mill. Each person receives a miners' lamp and a safety helmet for the dark tour. Please bring sturdy footwear and appropriate warm clothing.
