Symposium for the Week of Biodiversity 2026

As part of the Biodiversity Week 2026, the Service Center for Rural Areas (DLR) Mosel invites all interested parties to experience the ecological consequences of this structural change up close and to discuss them based on expertise. The symposium "The Future Grows on the Slope – Viticulture, Change, Biodiversity" is aimed at wine-growing businesses, nature experience guides, experts in nature conservation and landscape management, tourism experts, students, and all nature and wine enthusiasts. The morning session offers exciting lectures from experts on topics such as structural change in steep slope viticulture, biodiversity in vineyards, botanical succession on abandoned vine areas, and species-specific developments of birds, butterflies, grasshoppers, and reptiles. In the afternoon, the focus shifts to practice: During an excursion to the steep slopes along the Saar, participants will experience the differences between cultivated, fallow, and recultivated areas and receive expert explanations on-site. The conclusion will be a communal exchange over a glass of wine, where the insights gained will be discussed and recommendations for biodiversity-promoting use will be explored. The symposium makes it clear that the care and use of vineyard areas are crucial for the preservation of biodiversity and that unused areas do not automatically mean "nature." Participants will gain scientific insights, practical examples, and concrete recommendations for dealing with the challenges of structural change in steep slopes.
