How the oilseed is changing agriculture in Argentina
Argentina is one of the world's largest soybean producers. Soy serves as animal feed for global meat consumption, including in Europe.
The nearly ubiquitous use of genetically modified seeds, direct seeding, and massive pesticide use have profoundly changed agriculture. Cultivation is particularly profitable on large, capital-intensive land, which puts pressure on smaller farms and changes the constellation of actors. Argentina is therefore considered a paradigmatic example of structural change towards monocultures, genetic engineering, and global trade integration.
