Angela Aux is a phantom of the German pop cosmos, but not one that hides particularly well. His songs are played on the radio across Europe, he is streamed millions of times, and his music features in films. However, it is live that his full magic unfolds: between indie concert, philosophy crash course, and Dada comedy, he creates moments that make us laugh and dream. On October 23, 2026, his new album "DAS NICHTS MACHT KOPIEN VON SICH SELBST" will be released – his first in German – a journey through 90s grunge, the Hamburger Schule, and lo-fi, embedding the madness of the world in gentle pop anthems. The songwriter connects seemingly opposing elements, creating corridors between distant genres. One moment he sounds like Mac DeMarco with a Peter Licht chorus, the next like a J-Dilla version of Sufjan Stevens, only to oscillate shortly thereafter between the Beatles and Caribou. At times, he switches genres multiple times within his songs, transitioning from folk pickings to eclectic electronic patterns to ambient passages, and enjoys playing his own folk pieces in reduced dub versions. His kaleidoscope of profound songs and absurd thoughts creates a dreamlike, transcendent pull in live performances. Dancing on a fine line between sleep and wakefulness, the songwriter engages in a kind of serious Dadaism. The intertwining of apparent opposites such as talent and dilettantism, critique and silliness, partly recalls Helge Schneider. But Angela Aux is more melancholic. It is no coincidence that his folk songs often appear at particularly emotional moments in films, for example, when the heroine realizes that there is no life without disappointment ("About a Girl"), the prodigal son returns home with his mother ("Mein Sohn"), or Momo pauses for a brief moment before the showdown begins ("Momo").
After a concert, one feels as if they have simultaneously read a good book and watched a special film. Angela Aux shapeshifts like a quantum personality: whenever you think you've figured him out, he's already somewhere else, countering a wise thought with bizarre clumsiness. Or he cheerfully lists some of his fears, only to later reveal his favorite neuro-hacks. Concert-goers sometimes miss the subway after shows because they are lost in thought, reflecting on what they just experienced.
Cultural critics describe him as "the perfect mix of Kraftwerk and Bob Dylan" (Deutschlandfunk Kultur) and "a wondrous mythical creature with incredibly good songwriting" (FM4). The Süddeutsche Zeitung calls him a "wonder of a mix between Elliott Smith and The Notwist" and even refers to him as "the future of folk," while the music express confesses: "One will have to search long for a better folk album this year." His last album "SPACELARKING IN THE AGE OF SPIRITUAL MACHINES" was 'Album of the Week' at RadioEins and in Zündfunk / Bayern2. For his predecessor "INSTINCTIVE TRAVELS ON THE PATHS OF SPACE AND TIME," he wrote a science fiction novella and staged it together with the Munich Kammerspiele as a transmedia theater piece, which was also performed at the 'Fusion Festival' and the 'Berlin Science Week.'
"DAS NICHTS MACHT KOPIEN VON SICH SELBST" will be the first album in German and deals with the future of humanity (release: October 23, 2026). For his collage style, the vinyl collector this time draws from different record bins: from 90s grunge, Hamburger Schule, and lo-fi electronics, Angela Aux creates small pop anthems that gently embed the madness of the world, generating hope and euphoria.
