Experience Ancient Rome Up Close: ROMAN LIFE

The Center of Antiquity of the State Directorate for Cultural Heritage Rhineland-Palatinate invites you from May to September on the first weekend of each month to the event series "ROMAN LIFE – Roman Weekends in the World Heritage Site of Trier". In the historical atmosphere of the Roman buildings in Trier, visitors can rediscover life in the Roman Empire. The kick-off takes place on the first weekend of May at the imperial baths, which is entirely dedicated to Roman craftsmanship.

Whether weaving, bow making, cooking in a field kitchen, or writing in a Roman scriptorium – at many stations, visitors are allowed to try things out and participate. In a reconstruction of a Roman wine press, children can stomp grapes with their feet or polish their own stone at the gem cutter's station. Since horse training was also part of the craft during Roman times, horses can also be seen during ground work. The presentation of Celtic craftsmanship broadens perspectives on the predecessors of the Romans in the region.

In 2026, the Roman buildings in Trier will celebrate the 40th anniversary of World Heritage status. Illustrative and lively communication is one of the most important tasks for revitalizing the monuments. Therefore, in this special year, the GDKE has supplemented the established format of the Roman weekends with additional themes and attractions, such as beekeeping during Roman times. Additionally, a new highlight will be a functional replica of a Roman chariot, which will be presented for the first time on the first weekend of May and will serve as an unusual selfie point.
