In the backyard of the World Heritage - Maids, Washerwomen, and Day Laborers
Sunday, June 7, 2026, 10.30 a.m. from the City Museum, Römerstraße 97. Duration approx. 1.5 to 2 hours. Free admission.
City tour with Hans-Jürgen Sarholz, Association for History, Monument and Landscape Preservation e.V. Bad Ems
With the World Heritage "Great Spa Towns of Europe," we connect the visits of international guests. For them, all the hotels, guesthouses, and villas, which shape the image of the spa town, were created. However, the cogs in the machine were the people who worked for the guests. Maids, for example, constituted the largest group of workers in Bad Ems around 1870. What was their work? How did they live? Where did they reside? Countless day laborers, women and men, found a livelihood in the spa town. On a city tour from the museum to the spa house, we want to dedicate ourselves to these people and visit a real backyard in the process.
