Wetzlar's medieval city fortification, the former city wall, was built in sections between 1250 and 1300. The ring wall was 1.7 kilometers long and equipped with five gates, several small doors, and at least nine towers.
As the city expanded in the 19th century, large parts of the city wall were demolished. The traces of the city wall can be seen in the greenbelt ring of the parks that today surround Wetzlar's old town.
