With "Complicated Story!", the Schloss Spiele Reinthal brings a musical farce by Johann Nestroy to the Taggerhof in Kainbach near Graz. On June 19, 2026, the summer theater will celebrate its premiere, transforming the old farm into a brewery garden of the 19th century for one evening. Under the linden trees, amidst beer mugs and a cacophony of voices, a story full of heartbeats, jealousy, and clever excuses begins.
At the center is Pauline, a wealthy young heiress and ward of the brewery owner Kessel. Her heart belongs to Stern, an architect from Rome, whom she knows only through letters. Now, he is finally supposed to stand before her. But how does one recognize a person they have never seen? From this question, Nestroy weaves a chain of misunderstandings, mistaken identities, and quick-witted exchanges. Kessel and the waiter Franz also get involved, each with their own plans. Thus, an anticipated meeting turns into a genuine "complicated story."
Directed by Alfred Haidacher, the evening is infused with historical costumes, music, and the unmistakable tone of Nestroy, giving it a special flair. The Taggerhof fits this theme like an old beer mug on a tavern table: down-to-earth, close, and full of atmosphere. This open-air theater in the Graz region showcases how vibrant theater can be in Styria.
