Matthias Kempf Trio - "in such a time"

Matthias Kempf is one of the great unknowns of the Austrian music scene. Of course, he is not entirely unknown, and like his colleagues Andy Baum and Ulli Bäer – with whom he forms a quite popular trio – he is regarded by connoisseurs of the field as part of the A-list of music creators active in this country. At least, this is true regarding the quality of his work.

However, there is a need to catch up in terms of quantity: Kempf's last album release was many years ago. In 2026, though, one can speak and write of a memorable return, and already in November 2025, he sent out a first harbinger: the single "nur vor an koidn herz." It is a concentrate of the emotions accompanying Kempf's return – and it arrives just in time, like a message in a bottle "in so ana zeit" (as the new album is titled). The burden of proof now lies with attentive ears and eyewitnesses, meaning all of us.

In the trio formation, the songs gain a special intensity and intimacy that perfectly reveal the essence of his dialect music. Kempf is (and this is especially true for his concerts) not a high-speed train heading in one direction, but rather a meeting space: sometimes a waiting room for thoughts, sometimes a journey into the absurd – and always a place where one likes to linger a little longer…
