With a bang, Georg Friedrich Handel begins his operatic career in London: His 1711 premiere of Rinaldo tells a story of crusaders who want to wrest the holy city of Jerusalem from the "infidels." However, the Christian warrior Rinaldo soon becomes lost on a chaotic battlefield between Europe and the Orient, between magic and witchcraft, between virtue and sexuality. What does heroism even mean in a war for the true faith that is hardly winnable? Director Nadja Loschky does not focus on the clash of two politically-religious systems in her production, but instead portrays Rinaldo as a victim of a brutal war, before whose inner eye the opulent images of Handel's opera appear. For his crusaders and Ottoman warriors, for the Christian princess Almirena and the sorceress Armida, Handel wrote perhaps his most magnificent and varied score. His arias are, on one hand, character studies and, on the other hand, propel a gripping drama forward. With Francesco Corti, one of the most exciting conductors of Baroque music today, at the podium of the Academy for Ancient Music Berlin.
