Pop-up Gallery at Schloss Fischau, Bad Fischau-Brunn

On May 22, 2026, the pop-up gallery Industrieviertel will reopen its doors at Schloss Fischau. Our member Sylvia Schneider – also known as the City Weaver – from Wiener Neustadt will showcase her textile art in the exhibition "The Elegance of Simplicity."

Sylvia Schneider discovered her interest in textile techniques and Japan, with all its facets, particularly the kimono in its understated beauty and sophistication, during her childhood. When a significant transition in her life marked the end of one chapter, she began to delve deeper into Japanese textile techniques and also learned to weave on hand looms. The acquisition of a Japanese hand loom for her studio enabled her to weave fabrics in the original width for kimonos. The hand weaver sources her yarns directly from Japan and embroiders the fabric pieces using traditional Japanese techniques. Sylvia Schneider explores numerous other methods: printing the fabric pieces with an old printing press or partially dyeing the fabrics with indigo according to ancient Japanese or modern patterns. The pieces are then hand-sewn into kimonos – without generating waste. However, the hand weaver also creates fabrics for many other uses, such as clothing, table linens, and curtains.

Through her work and love for the textile craft, the City Weaver aims to highlight and appreciate the beauty and significance of nature and ancient techniques, while also creating a cultural bridge to Japan. Her preferred yarns include cotton, ramie, linen, and silk, as well as the use of the natural dye indigo, which she cultivates in her garden. The free choice of material, pattern, and color allows for countless variations, ensuring that each textile is unique and one-of-a-kind.
