Music is like a good conversation: You understand each other even without many words. But when jazz suddenly speaks German, a familiar dialogue turns into a surprising punchline – and with a healthy portion of swing, it's an evening even for those who usually give jazz the verbal cold shoulder.
In their characterful and stylish mix of traditional standards and modern influences, the Porta Jazz Band stands on solid ground: Rüdiger Garbisch on bass acts as the "band motor," forming the rhythmic backbone, Fred Noll on drums provides an unmistakable drive, while Hubert Eiden on keyboard brings harmonic color to the game. The soloists Birgit Pickan and Elke Holzmüller add that warm, expressively nuanced note to the sound, transforming pure virtuosity into genuine emotion. Wilfried Hoffmann on trumpet and flugelhorn, as well as Markus Poschenrieder on tenor saxophone, bring clear colors and agile energy potential to the sound image. With their program "Jazz gets German," virtuosity and clever wordplay come together with energetic improvisations – a tribute to the jazz and swing tradition of their native language.
