Forest Wonders and Ice Secrets

We’ll spot rare lung lichen, visit the largest silver fir in the Todtmoos municipal area, and tour the historic ice cellar. We’ll hike east of the Wehra River up to the large beech tree at the start of the Frauenwaldweg trail. The descent follows the Frauenwasenbächlein stream to the “Queen of the Silver Fir Trees.” We then follow the Wehra upstream and cross it at a suitable spot to reach the entrance of the historic ice cellar. Sure-footedness is required to cross the river on stepping stones. We then return to the starting point at the Tourist Information Office. Until the middle of the last century, block and stick ice was stored in the tunnel of the current ice cellar for the Todtmoos taverns, lasting well into the summer to keep the beer cool. The ice cellar, 13 meters long, is located near the Wehra stream and was dug up to seven meters underground. It can only be reached by walking across the Wehra via a few steps. In winter, the stream’s water was dammed; the resulting ice was sawed into blocks and sticks and stored for months in the tunnel, which reaches a height of up to six meters. The ice cellar is the destination of the guided hike. At the end, a freshly chilled glass of sparkling wine and a light snack await us there.
