Architectural History Tour of the Humpis-Quartier Museum. Embark on an architectural history tour through the museum’s largest exhibit: the late-medieval residential quarter itself! The Humpis-Quartier Museum looks back on a long and eventful history of various construction phases and renovations: In the museum’s vaulted cellar lie the foundation walls of so-called House 1, the oldest residential building discovered in Ravensburg, which was built in the 11th century and where archaeological finds have confirmed the presence of a leather craftsman and his workshop. The late-medieval residential quarter acquired its present character through the buildings of the Humpis merchant family, who gave their name to the seven houses grouped around an inner courtyard. During their time, the Bohlenstube and the chapel bay window—which still adorns Marktstraße today—were constructed. In the late Middle Ages and early modern period, the residential units became smaller, and various families and businesses shared the houses. The conversion into a museum, which took place in the 2000s, reunited the previously separated buildings into a single complex, added modern elements, and enabled comprehensive archaeological and architectural-historical investigations.
